Everwild - Eternals TrailerโReorchestration
A transcription and reorchestration of the Everwild - Eternals Trailer music. It was originally composed by Robin Beanland and Chloe Kwok, and therefore all rights go to them, Rare Ltd.and Microsoft. I've had the music to this trailer stuck in my head since it came out and have been working on this ever since! Gosh - if the announce trailer and Eternals trailer are anything to go by, then this game is going to have one HELL of a soundtrack. I'm honestly really, really hyped and I can't wait to see everything unfold and learn more about it- I've a feeling it's going to be another special one (Rare are quite good at that, haha). I'm pretty sure the main theme is that ๐ผ 3/4 โฉ (F) โซ (Eโญ- Aโญ) | โฉ. (G) || melody (or at very least the 'Everwild' leitmotif. It'll be interesting to hear how it's reworked and how/where it'll appear in game! So many possibilities... Guess we'll just have to wait and find out! This track in particular was a labour of about 3 months and I originally planned on finishing it back in July after the trailer first released - so much for that!

Lanayru Sand Sea - Zelda: Skyward SwordโReorchestration
A reorchestration of the Lanayru Sand Sea from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. It was originally composed by Takeshi Hama, and therefore all rights go to him and to Nintendo. In celebration of the new HD remaster of Skyward Sword releasing on the Switch, I thought I'd cover my favourite track from Skyward Sword and one of my all time favourite pieces from the whole series. Such an incredible piece, so atmospheric and emotive - the bells that repeat throughout, tolling as if to remind the player of a time long ago and the great sea that once was; a place once vibrant, colourful and full of life, now devoid of all but the dust and the shifting sands of a thousand years. The dunes but a pale imitation of the great waves of the before and each grain of sand a mere distant memory, a leftover of what used to be, destined to move around a barren wasteland for eternity. Haunting and ethereal, this track reminds you. Reminds you of what was, cruising on the vast sea of nothingness. It really is a shame so many people seems to dislike Skyward Sword for various reasons, because they miss out on a fantastic OST that is far from unmemorable. While I have to admit the controls of the original haven't held up that well, for a game 10 years old, everything else about it absolutely has. While there are things I agree and disagree with about this remaster, here's hoping people who missed out originally will have a chance to play through an even better and enhanced version of a truly stellar Zelda title. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background video content and logo are from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and are owned by Nintendo. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Final Hours - Zelda: Majora's MaskโReorchestration
A reorchestration of Final Hours from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. It was originally composed by Koji Kondo, and therefore all rights go to him and to Nintendo. Though there's a certain something about the original that will NEVER be beaten by any arrangement, I thought I'd try my hand at this legendary song. Isn't it crazy how just a handful of chords voiced in the right way can evoke so many emotions? This piece is another prime example of Koji Kondo's mastery over music - being able to so perfectly convey the exact emotions you'd expect from a piece of music written for the end of the word. It's almost as if this song continually rises and falls with the Kรผbler-Ross cylcle of grief; a sense of initial anger and denial with the opening chords which shift and modulate into C minor and begin stepping chromatically - a more eerie progression signifying bargaining and depression before rising in tension to the piece's climax and dropping down to the subdominant and resolving, acceptance - before repeating again. I'll never forget the first time I played this game, having literally NO idea what to do, running out of time and seeing that terrifying destruction sequence - wow does this game really make you feel absolutely terrible for failing (and rightly so!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background video content is from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and is owned by Nintendo. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OTHER VIDEOS USED: Majora's Mask Screensaver by Jesterz Ball Gaming Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdqathWcgUA Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDZvMozHKn_bpeqbSWRXXbQ

Gerudo Valley - Zelda: Ocarina of TimeโReorchestration
A reorchestration of Gerudo Valley from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It was originally composed by Koji Kondo, and therefore all rights go to him and to Nintendo. Ahhhh Gerudo Valley... such a timeless, legendary theme - considered by many to be the greatest song in Ocarina of Time and even the greatest song Koji Kondo has ever composed, and honestly it's very easy to see why. The catchy guitar lead, those repeating guitar and percussion rhythms urging the song onwards, perfectly capturing the spirit of a thieves' fortress in a near-unhospitable wasteland of a desert perfectly and able to not only survive repeated listening time after time, but then also get stuck in your head VERY easily! I personally have always loved this theme ever since playing Ocarina when I was much, much younger and I'd just LOVE to see it return to the series someday. FUN FACT: an obscure anime called Dodge Danpei features a track called Mido Arashi's Theme that may possibly have served as inspiration for Mr. Kondo - it was released in 1991, whereas OoT was released in 1998 so who knows? And so another decade begins! Hope you've all been well, and thank you so SO much for continuing to listen to my orchestrations! It really means the world to me and I appreciate every single one of you! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background content is from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and is owned by Nintendo. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mother 3 - SeriousโReorchestration
A reorchestration of the Serious battle theme from Mother 3. It was originally composed by Shogo Sakai, and therefore all rights go to him, HAL Laboratory, Brownie Brown, Nintendo and Tokyo Itoi Shigesato Office. The Mother/ Earthbound series has had a long history with breaking the mould when it comes to game soundtracks. Earthbound used musical sampling to great effect, with samples from Monty Python to The Beach Boys and of course, The Beatles. Mother 3, while unable to use sampling to such a great extent (thanks to the limitations of the GBA's memory and sound card), in my own humble opinion, still manages to hold its own. A perfect mix of quirkiness, originality and just plain old fun that all combine into an album's worth of tracks able to easily give you stuck song syndrome, very quickly. (This track in particular I had never had any thought of covering until I listened to the OST a week ago. Long story short - here we are now; One, three, one-two-three, one-two-three-four, two-three...) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visuals created by Garen J. Overworld Theme - Super Mario Bros. 2โReorchestration
A reorchestration of the Overworld Theme from Super Mario Bros. 2. It was originally composed by Koji Kondo, and therefore all rights go to him and to Nintendo. What an absolute classic this theme is. No matter what version, what variation, it always seems to bring a smile to your face. Simple, quirky, upbeat and just plain fun - it's the epitome of what the perfect overworld theme should be and should represent. I went for more of a ragtime/big band vibe here, inspired mostly by the Super Mario All Stars remake version and also a ragtime piano version I originally arranged when I was first learning piano as a kid (inspired by the wonderful ragtime piano game music covers by the legendary Tom Brier, whose insane sight-reading skills and playing I would wholeheartedly recommend you check out if you never have). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background video content is from Super Smash Bros. Melee and is owned by HAL Laboratory and Nintendo. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Super Mario Bros 2. Performance Samples Vista Strings - Demo Test | Far Horizons
Just a quick lil' mockup of Far Horizons using Performance Samples' brand new and absolutely incredible Vista Strings library. I absolutely LOVE those legato transitions and honestly can't recommend these strings enough. Please excuse the slightly shoddy automation work and weird note transitions here and there (only did this in an afternoon). I might extend this into a full-blown cover one day, maybe - we'll see. ~--------------------------------------~ Main YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/MatthewNewsomeComposer/

Life in The Mines - Donkey Kong CountryโReorchestration
A reorchestration of the Life in The Mines level theme from Donkey Kong Country. It was originally composed by David Wise, and therefore all rights go to him and Rare Ltd. Another really interesting piece, yet again perfectly managing to completely nail the thematic vibe intended all in an audio format. The use of those looped sound effects as a sort of percussive ambience really helps to nail the whole cavern/mine/underground feel and that solo flute melody really drives home just how alone you are in such a massive space. Sorrowful, but with just enough of a hint of hope at the end - and really reinforced when the kit comes in, helping to drive the piece forward, much like the player. Onward through the gloom.

Sea of Thieves - Bosun Bill โReorchestration
A reorchestration of Bosun Bill from Sea of Thieves. It was originally composed by Robin Beanland and therefore all rights go to him and to Rare Ltd. The soundtrack to SOT is excellent. Every background song, every shanty, every incidental cue conveys so much and so perfectly represents the core aspects of the game. Hats off to Mr. Beanland's amazing work. The game screenshot, Sea of Thieves logo and music are all the original property of Rare Ltd., and therefore all rights belong to them! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background Cinematic by Skilful Starship: Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZpxAaB2R_k Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY543HPoY3zHULjJ7IM0TJQ

I've already done a re-orchestration of the music for this fantastic trailer, so I only thought it fitting that I should go ahead and work on a rescore of the sound design too! This was am incredibly fun challenge that I managed to finish in a single day!

3714QCM โ Proof of Concept
For this project I worked with practical elements of music for non-linear contexts, first choosing a representative piece from an original gameโs OST (Braithwaite Manor Battle from Read Dead Redemption II) as a temp track, before composing a suite of musical compositions linked thematically and timbrally supporting a branched narrative and including a variety of game music cue types. These were then implemented into an FMOD Studio Project which demonstrates various music integration techniques (using game parameters) such as looping regions, transition regions and crossfading transitions, among others. My first goal was to compose a set of pieces in the Morricone-influenced, unmistakably โspaghetti westernโ style of Read Dead Redemption II - pieces which could be taken apart and changed in such a way that would allow for multiple, interchangeable loops that could be randomly recombined for different interpretations and in order to keep the piece developing and attention-retaining as well as of adjustable length. I would also make sure to (wherever possible) create alternate segments which are able to transition and link to various other sections of a piece if called for.

3714QCM - Gameplay Screencast
For this project I aimed to manipulate a variety of sound elements in a non- linear context, and apply and integrate said assets into Unity to develop an evolving and appropriate soundscape for a game level in a survival horror genre, whilst also developing my understanding and application of skills in working with a variety of workflows. I used a variety of originally recorded and manipulated assets from Foley and field recordings, as well as several synthesised sounds created with a variety of modular, FM, wavetable, additive and sample-based synthesis varieties. Using Unity I integrated atmospheric, sound design-based fear emitters which emit sound cues of a similar style to those used in the game Dead Space, as well as Spaceship Power sound effects, more esoteric pickup impact sounds, an opening โscareโ system which plays five seconds after the project first plays (as well as an another supplementary โscareโ sound to play instantly succeeding this), hidden, player-triggerable Shock Zones triggered by invisible location-based activators as well as objects triggering audio to play remotely in the game environment and an assortment of various narrative appropriate voice overs which fit your narrative and randomly select when triggered.
